To compile these rankings, editors have evaluated 4,438 universities, qualified 3,098 and ranked 1,117 institutions in total. For the first TPU has taken the position 390 on Engineering & Technology and high places on some subjects: Engineering – Chemical in the band 201-250 (the second among Russian universities), Engineering – Electrical & Electronic and Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing in the band 251-300 (the fifth place in Russia). TPU has improved its ranking in Natural Sciences on Physics & Astronomy, a single subject area in 2016, from the band 301-400 to 251-300. In the same subject area TPU has been ranked on Chemistry in the band 451-500 for the first.

Rector Petr Chubik comments TPU positions in the rankings:
“Subject rankings are those peculiarities which highlight what research and academic areas we are competitive at the world level in and what subjects we should improve. These peculiarities eventually contribute to the dynamics in the overall university rankings.
We are delighted with the results of the QS University Rankings by Subject 2017. For the first time we have entered in our special subject area Engineering & Technology, what is more on three subjects and directly to high positions – on one we ranks in the top 250 of the world’s leading universities, on two – in the top 300. This is groundbreaking. TPU confirms its status of one of the best engineering universities both in Russia and the world.
Promotion in subject rankings is very important for us as since 2016 the ranking positions have become as important indicators for the 5-100 Project university participants as positions in the overall rankings. This is one of the key implementation measures of the program on the competitiveness enhancement of Russian universities among global leading research and educational centers. The QS University Rankings by Subject 2017outcomes inspire us to hope for promotion in the overall QS University Rankings 2017.”
