TPU online courses win medals at educational exhibition UchSib

The Center for Digital Education (CDE) of Tomsk Polytechnic University won three awards at the annual exhibition of educational organizations, equipment and academic literature UchSib-2018 in Novosibirsk.

A small gold medal was awarded to the MOOC You Are Your Own Logistician. Developing Entrepreneurial Thinking. The course was designed at School of Core Engineering Education (authors: Elena Vershkova and Liliya Tukhvatulina) together with CDE and is aimed at developing skills of taking optimal decisions based on logistical principles. It features an active immersing in the analysis of real management and life situations, an opportunity to ‘experience’ them via virtual simulators. In 2017, a pilot course was launched, in which 2,300 learners took part. Next time the course will start in May on the educational platform Stepik and be available for everyone.

A silver medal of the exhibition was awarded to the simulator Virtual Geo: TPU Virtual Geology Polygon which is a unique academic resource created by joint efforts of Division for Geology of School of Earth Sciences & Engineering (Alla Falk, Irina Rychkova) and CDE.

«The project enables interactive walking along geological routs by a virtual person and seeing from this person that makes students to master practical working skills under field conditions on the simulated real geological routs.»

Even before the completion of the development works, the simulator had already utilized in training TPU students for academic practice, as well as for the organization of the virtual stage of the All-Russian Olympiad for young geologists. Now it is installed in a study class of the School of Earth Sciences & Engineering and accessible for users,’ told one of the developers of the project Deputy Director of Center for Digital Education Alexander Kuznetsov.

A set of online courses on physics and mathematics designed for the main educational programs of core engineering education also was awarded with the certificate of competition. Currently it is a system designed by School of Core Engineering Education (Olga Imas, Evgeniya Molodovanova, Elena Lisichko, and Nadezhda Kravchenko) and CDE is actively used for training students of all forms of education.

According to Ass. Prof. Olga Imas from Division for Mathematics and Computer Science, the exhibition UchSib is both a good chance to present own professional achievements and an opportunity to have immediately live dialog with entrants and their parents, to respond in time to their requests and interests.

The annual exhibition UchSib is held in Novosibirsk. Thousands of representatives of educational institutions visit its events. Within the exhibition, participants can both get familiar with the best existing practices and present own relevant methodological and management developments, implemented projects for education development, and innovative educational products.
