TPU becomes one of the world best technical universities by Academic Ranking of World Universities

The ARWU has published its ranking report Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.  Currently, the ARWU is one of the top world university rankings along with the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the QS World University Rankings. TPU reached the 201-300th position in the Engineering by the subject Instruments Science & Technology.  The university shares this ranking with such renowned universities as Ecole Polytechnique (France), Aalto University (Finland), Technion (Israel), and others.

Petr Chubik, the Rector of Tomsk Polytechnic University, highlights:

"The second year in a row, our University is in the list of the world best technical universities by Academic Ranking of World Universities.  In the Engineering field, the Russian universities reached positions in 11 subjects.  Unfortunately, two of these subjects are not related to TPU. It is Metallurgy and Mining.  The former was transferred in 1930 to Siberian Metallurgical Institute (currently - Siberian State Industrial University), the latter one in 1960 to Kemerovo Mining Institute (currently - Kuzbass State Technical University named after Timothy Gorbachev, by the way, our graduate). In the remaining nine subjects we were overtaken only by two capital universities.

In general, the results of the ARWU report allow us to make a simple and obvious conclusion: you can receive highly qualified engineering education not only at capital universities but at Tomsk Polytechnic University.  I am sure that Russian and international prospective students are well informed about it and have already made the right choice in favor of TPU. "

This year, the ARWU experts evaluated more than four thousand universities by 54 subjects in five fields.  Engineering, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences. The ranking takes into account such indicators as the number of Nobel and Fields laureates among university graduates and teachers, the number of published articles and their quoting.

Additionally, articles published in the journals Nature or Science, the citation index for natural sciences and humanities, and the size of the university itself will help gain extra points for the ranking.

It is worth noting, that this year 17 Russian universities succeeded to enter the ARWU ranking.

For the first time, Academic Ranking of World Universities was published in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities – CWCU, the Academy of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiaotong University.  The ARWU published its reports annually.  Additionally, it published a ranking report - Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by particular academic subjects.
