The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019 by Subject included TPU in two more subject areas. In Engineering and Technology, Tomsk Polytechnic University enters the band 201-250. Moscow State University tops the table among other Russian universities. For the first time, TPU ranks in Computer Science in the band 401-500.
The published table of Computer Science includes 684 universities, Engineering and Technology includes 903. The achievements were evaluated based on statistical analysis of activities as well as the annual global survey of experts from the academic community and employers. The subject tables employ the same range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings 2019, brought together with scores provided under five categories. They are teaching, research and citations, international outlook and industry income.
Rankings include a wide range of specific subject areas. For example, Engineering and Technology includes general engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering.
Now the scientists of Tomsk Polytechnic University conduct engineering research in various strands. Thus, TPU actively participates in six large collaborations of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) and contributes to the upgrade of the detectors of the Large Hadron Collider.
TPU researchers study the extreme state physics, in particular, fuel ignition and combustion. The research of microcapsules for target drug delivery and genome editing is conducted, physical and chemical technology for growing living tissues, biodegradable materials, next-generation drugs with metal nanoparticles are developed. The Tomsk-TPU-120 satellite which is the first spacecraft created using 3D technology and unique materials orbited the Earth. It was designed in the framework of the RadioScaf experiment at the TPU Research Center Modern Manufacturing Technologies jointly with the Rocket Space Corporation Energia and the Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science SB RAS.
In this alliance, there is a number of implemented unique developments. For example, a 3D printer for zero gravity was created alongside with protective coatings for portholes of spaceships.
