Stake on elite engineers: Forbes includes TPU in top-10 best Russian universities

Forbes Russia has published a rating of Russian universities. The rating is aimed both to assess the quality of Russian education and identify which universities train specialists with entrepreneurial skills who are capable to later join the Forbes list and become a part of Russian political elite. Tomsk Polytechnic University made it to the top-10 of the list, taking up the 9th place. TPU is the only non-metropolitan institution in the first dozen of the country and in the city of Tomsk. For instance, Tomsk State University ranks 26, Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics – 27, and Siberian State Medical University – 70.

Forbes Russia first published the list in 2018. TPU immediately took a high 12th position. According to the rating’s authors, technical universities have strongly improved their positions this year.

‘Modern economy is indispensably linked with new technology, and graduates of technical universities are destined be the elite of the country like nobody else,’

the study says.

The rating methodology has not changed since 2018. Data on performance of over 1,000 institutions of higher education prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation was used. The methodology takes into account both quality of education and statistics of graduates employment, their relevance in the regions, the number of entrepreneurs among them. Forbes also studied biographies of over 1,600 representatives of Russian elite including members of the Forbes list and their children, heads of private and state-owned companies, officials, and deputies. Universities were evaluated by 10 criteria grouped by three constituents: quality of education, quality of graduates, and the Forbes factor. It takes into account ‘selectivity’ of an institution and the share of entrepreneurs in the total number of graduates.

Tomsk Polytechnic University scored 48.59 in the rating. TPU took the strongest position in quality of education. The University ranks six in the rating. This year, the top of the rating are MISiS, MGIMO University, and MIPT.
