Petr Chubik: ‘Knowledge is the primary way to the development of an individual and the wider society’

Acting Rector of Tomsk Polytechnic University Petr Chubik congratulates all TPU members on the Knowledge Day!

‘Dear students, PhDs, and teachers! Dear TPU members! I congratulate you on the start of a new academic year and Knowledge Day!

Knowledge is the primary way to the development of an individual and society as a whole. We hardly can argue with that.

For 123 years, TPU has been going on building up the research and innovative potential as the first Russian generator of engineering education eastward of Moscow.

Our modern, highly valued and competitive university is embedded into the knowledge economy advancement where the human assets and the value of income-generating knowledge come to the fore, ensuring the basis for the priority sectors of the national economy.

Therefore, the new academic year for everyone of us is not just a new stage in life. We begin it with the hope for new discoveries and achievements in the training of highly qualified specialists who are able to make technological changes and successfully solve engineering challenges of tomorrow. On the threshold of 2019/2020, TPU keeps the leading positions of the top universities in Russia according to all leading international and national universities rankings. TPU is the only Russian university in top 100 of Global Ranking of Academic Subjects of Shanghai Ranking 2019 in Mechanical Engineering as well as the first university in Tomsk to hit the world’s premier league.

The role of a key player in the international market of research and academic services and the leading position in the family of Russian technical universities in the upcoming academic year ensured TPU the increasing demand among the most outstanding applicants. The best of the high achievers preferred to study at our university: 39 subject olympiad winners, 135 people with high-ranking scores, earned 255-300 scores on USE, 450 highly motivated foreign citizens entering programs of all degree levels.

We consider as a selectivity advantage the fact that the average admission score in TPU increased by 5 points compared to the last year, the minimal one – by 30 points. The topmost popular directions include Software Engineering, Biotechnology, Electronics and Automation of Physical Installations, Computer Science and Technology, Petroleum Engineering, and Applied Mathematics and Informatics. We maintain the dynamics in the number of state-funded places, having admitted 32 state-funded students more than in the previous year. Meantime, our university became a center of attraction for nonresident applicants, representatives of other regions, from near and far abroad. In the framework of the 2019 Admission Campaign, foreign nationals from 20 countries were enrolled in TPU. We still keep the status of one of the most international university in Russia and in the world. Being a university of graduate and postgraduate studies, which implements master programs in English, TPU is of great demand among Russian graduates, including petroleum universities in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Ufa, Tyumen, Kazan, and Samara. Over 100 cities in Russia and abroad made up the geography of our applicants. Recruiting talented young people in master and PhD studies we try to keep high standards in every area: providing effective exchange and DD programs and comfortable living conditions, ensuring all the conditions for advanced knowledge and unique competences.

In terms of new digital reality which our current students will live in and work, to prove the need for knowledge is the same as to convince the usefulness of vision…

Dear friends! At the beginning of the new 2019/2020 academic year, I ask you about the main thing: be patient, be persistent and zealous. After all, the more knowledge you accumulate the less time you will need to achieve your goal. Enrich your experience base day by day, and you will see how it makes your life easier!

I congratulate all those who on behalf of Tomsk Polytechnic University was called upon to teach and study, on the holiday that is always with us! I wish everyone – from freshmen to professors perfect results in your studies and research, great creative successes and, of course, strong health, personal happiness, and prosperity! May all the days of coming academic year be the days of discoveries, lessons of wisdom, and truth!’
