Chinese Company Purchases at TPU Betatrons For Its Inspection Systems

Representatives of the Chinese company PowerScan Ltd have signed with Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) contracts to acquire four betatrons - small accelerators produced in the university; signing took place during the visit of the Chinese company delegation headed by the Director Ms. Song Xiaoming to TPU.   The parties agreed that TPU would also provide service maintenance for the betatrons and develop software for inspection systems based on the betatrons. Tomsk software allows identifying the types of materials in an inspected object: organics, metals or composite materials. “Three units based on the TPU betatrons have been already launched in China. Now PowerScan Ltd ordered four betatrons more at the University – pointed out Valeriy Borikov, director of the Institute for nondestructive testing, TPU. - Maintenance and development of the software for them will be carried out by the Russian-Chinese Laboratory of Radiation Control and Inspection.” The software testing, work algorithm proving of the inspection systems at PowerScan Ltd will be conducted on the oversized cargo inspection system created by TPU just on the betatron basis. The inspection system is set in a specially renovated building of 300 square meters. Valeriy Borikov pointed out also that today Tomsk Polytechnic University has been actively involved in the development and production of both domestic and foreign inspection systems based on the betatron. Besides the three operating in China, five such facilities were launched by TPU partner companies in Russia, the two - on the border of Singapore and Malaysia. “I believe we have worked well together with Tomsk Polytechnic University and come to an understanding on many issues - said Ms. Song Syaoming. - The goal of our company is production of the inspection systems that meet international standards. The software testing, work algorithm proving of the inspection systems at PowerScan Ltd will be conducted on the oversized cargo inspection system created by TPU just on the betatron basis.

The quality of the systems developed by our company in conjunction with TPU meets these standards.

TPU technology advantage over the existing analogs is cost efficiency in the production and maintenance of the inspection systems. That is why today in China our joint products are in high demand by customs, border services, as well as airport security and many other areas that require strict control of freight transport.”

Song Syaoming also added that during the cooperation with TPU the company PowerScan Ltd got interested in other developments of the University too.

“We are interested in many other activities of TPU. For example, findings of Tomsk scientists in the field of physics of nondestructive testing and medicine,”- said Song Syaoming.

Based on the betatrons the University today is developing tomographs with 150 microns resolution that can scan large objects up to five meters in diameter.

The previous meeting of the representatives of the company and TPU was held in late January 2015 in China as part of an international forum on technology security systems. During the meeting a long-term cooperation agreement between the company PowerScan Ltd and Tomsk Polytechnic University for 2015 - 2017 years was prepared, as well as joint work schedules. Last week, the documents were officially signed.

Betatrons - particle accelerators, generating secondary X-rays. They are used in industry to control the strength of welding or casting, as well as in inspection systems. X-rays produced with Tomsk accelerators can scan steel up to 30 centimeters. This is one of the earliest innovations of Tomsk polytechnics, TPU has got started producing betatrons since the early 1960s.

The Russian-Chinese Laboratory of Radiation Control and Inspection was established at TPU on May 15, 2014. Today, the Laboratory carries out development of combined methods, technologies and systems for radiation monitoring and inspection, improvement and upgrading technical characteristics of the sources of radiation (betatrons) for new inspection systems, visualization and image processing for radiation monitoring and cargo inspection.
