First Bolivian Experts in Radiobiology and Radioecology to Conduct TPU Training

Tomsk Polytechnic University is continuing to train staff and develop teaching and learning aids for a project of the Rosatom State Corporation — the Center for Nuclear Technology Research and Development (CNTRD) in El Alto (Bolivia).

The next stage of the project will be training the staff for the Laboratory for Radiobiology and Radioecology.

TPU has been engaged in the project since 2019. During this period, the staff team of the Bolivian Nuclear Energy Agency (ABEN), who is going to further work in the Multipurpose Irradiation Center (MIC) on the territory of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, has passed the training in a mixed mode. The first stage of the training was conducted at the basis of TPU. For the course attendees, there were arranged practicals in the laboratories of the TPU School of Nuclear Science and Engineering, and the TPU School of Non-Destructive Testing. The second stage of the training was carried out in an online mode. The educational process was finished in Bolivia, where TPU experts headed for.

This summer, the next stage of the project unit has started. Jointly with the staff of the Siberian Research Institute for Agriculture and Peat (SRIAP) (a branch of the Siberian Federal Research Center for Agrobiotechnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the TPU team took part in the selection of the next group of attendees from Bolivia.

“The ABEN has selected over 20 candidates. Our team of experts held a two-day selection on the territory of Bolivia. Every participant took special tests and had an interview with representatives of Rosatom and the Bolivian side.

Finally, there were selected 14 people. It is planned that they will come to complete training in Tomsk in late summer or early autumn. The course will last until late 2022. The classes will be held on the basis of TPU and the SRIAP. For us, it is the first experience of the implementation of an advanced training program in the network mode,” comments the project head, deputy director and head of International Nuclear Education Programs at the TPU School of Nuclear Science and Engineering Vera Verkhoturova.

TPU and SRIAP will train staff and develop teaching and learning materials for the Laboratory for Radiobiology and Radioecology, one more unit of the CNTRD, in the organization of which, Rosatom is engaged.

“There will be a few research teams in the Laboratory, for instance, in microbiology and agronomy. Therefore, staff with special education is required,” explains the TPU expert.
