PhD Students from 29 Countries Study at TPU

January 21 is Day of PhD student in Russia. In total, 871 PhD students conduct their research works in different areas at Tomsk Polytechnic University. Over 200 of them are international students from the Commonwealth of Independent States and far abroad countries.

January 21 is Day of PhD student in Russia. In total, 871 PhD students conduct their research works in different areas at Tomsk Polytechnic University. Over 200 of them are international students from the Commonwealth of Independent States and far abroad countries.

The date was set up on January 21, as 97 years ago, on this day in 1925, the Council of People’s Commissars of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic released documents regulating the training system of research staff. These documents were named Regulations on University Research Staff and Guides on Training Procedures of Research Staff in Applied, Exact and Natural Sciences at Research Institutes and Universities. This date became a holiday comparatively recently, in 2008.

In accordance with the data of the TPU Postgraduate and Doctoral Office, 871 PhD students study at the university, 818 out of them are full-time students.

Moreover, 212 PhD students of TPU are international. It must be mentioned that 112 students came from the Commonwealth of Independent Countries and others from far abroad countries. There are PhD students from Jordan, China, Cameroon, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Indonesia, Ghana, Yemen, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, France, Italy, Syria, Venezuela, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Serbia, Ivory Coast and El Salvador.

TPU trains PhD students in 19 research areas, including 70 majors in engineering, mathematics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, geology, economics, philosophy, pedagogy, art history and earth science.

PhD students’ thesis research is supervised by 210 academic advisers, including 150 Doctors of Sciences, Professors.
