RAEX Subject Rankings: TPU Tops in Chemical Engineering and Power Engineering among Russian Universities

RAEX Agency has published its second annual subject rankings of Russian universities. Tomsk Polytechnic University, same as last year, ranked fifth in the overall rankings. Only universities from Moscow and St. Petersburg outperformed in the ranking. While TPU ranked first for Power and Electrical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

The lists of top universities included 164 universities from 42 regions of Russia (in 2022, 136 educational institutions were listed in 29 rankings).

The top five of the overall ranking included Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, the Higher School of Economics, Bauman Moscow State Technical University and Tomsk Polytechnic University.

The new rankings were first presented last year. In the new release, the number of areas covered increased by 20% to 35 areas, including mathematics, a broad range of natural sciences and engineering majors, social sciences and humanities, as well as education, medicine, and agriculture.

The rankings are based on three groups of indicators that are commonly featured in the Three University Missions rankings: education, research, and social impact. However, the subject rankings consider the specific nature of each subject area: the set of indicators and their weights differ depending on the subject area. For example, for science and engineering the weight of the "science" group is 35%, while for social sciences and humanities it is 25%.
