TPU Celebrates the 55th Anniversary of the Research Reactor with New Production, Excursions, and Lectures

Tomsk Polytechnic University is celebrating 55 years since the first university research reactor starting.

This is the only operating university reactor in Russia and the only research reactor beyond the Urals. To celebrate this, fr om September 5 to September 10, TPU holds the Days of Atomic Science and Technology — more than a dozen events for the expert community, scientists, students, Tomsk residents and guests of the city.

Open excursions to the reactor for citizens, technical tours to the TPU laboratories for schoolchildren, and popular science lectures are planned. At the reactor, Russia's first complex for doping large-diameter silicon, a semiconductor for more powerful electronics, in particular, for green energy complexes, will be put into commercial operation. There are only a few such factories in the world.

TVEL Fuel Company and the Siberian Chemical Combine are TPU's partners for the Days of Atomic Science and Technology. The complete event schedule is available on the website

“Today, the TPU reactor is a modern educational, scientific, and industrial platform with development plans for decades. Therefore, a large expert community will gather here in September. They are the first people from the main Russian nuclear enterprises and scientists. I am sure that we will be able to have a meaningful and honest discussion of the serious issues of nuclear industry development, personnel training, international cooperation, and the latest results of cutting-edge research. We intend to build a complex for nuclear doping of silicon with a maximum diameter of more than 200 mm. This was preceded by serious calculating and preparatory work for several years, including two years of trial operation. The new production startup will allow Russia to obtain silicon for more powerful, high-performance electronics, as well as reduce its cost. We will be able to produce up to four tons of such silicon per year,” Dmitry Sednev, acting rector of Tomsk Polytechnic University, says.

On September 7-9, the XI International Scientific and Practical Conference “Physico-technical issues in science, industry, and medicine” will be held for scientists, students, and the expert community. Russian and foreign scientists are going to discuss advanced nuclear technologies, nuclear medicine, and digitalization issues in the nuclear industry.

Conference participants, as well as TPU staff and students, can sign up for an excursion to the nuclear reactor. Details. For Tomsk residents, it is planned to conduct several excursions during September. The registration procedure will be published on the university website and on social media later.

Two round tables are scheduled for September 6. Their topics are “The use of nuclear research infrastructure for training Russian and international personnel” and “Retirement of nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities and development of closed nuclear fuel cycle technologies”. On September 7, a panel discussion on the development of nuclear medicine will take place.

On Friday, September 9, TPU will host a visiting session of the Women in the Nuclear Industry Association. It is planned to conduct mentoring sessions for Russian and foreign female students studying in nuclear educational programs. Women who have made significant contributions to nuclear science and technology will share their stories of success with them.

An extensive program for students, schoolchildren, and Tomsk residents is also planned. Every day from September 5 to 10, everyone will be able to see the photo exhibition “Atomic Age”, which will be located in the TPU International Cultural Center (13v Usova Street).

On September 7, in the afternoon, excursions to the university laboratories will be organized for schoolchildren. On the evenings of September 7 and 8, TPU Engineering Yard (entrance to the right of the main building, 30 Lenin Avenue) will host open lectures on hydrogen technologies and thermonuclear fusion.

On the evening of September 7, a meeting of the live communication club TOK will be held at the TPU International Cultural Center. It will be possible to watch popular science films on the topic of nuclear technology and discuss them with TPU scientists.

The Tomsk Polytechnic University research reactor (IRT-T) is the only operating university nuclear reactor in Russia. It is included in the list of unique scientific installations and is a mega-science platform wh ere advanced research in the fields of nuclear technology and nuclear medicine is carried out.

The reactor was launched 55 years ago, in 1967. Since then it has been modernized several times. The key scientific and production areas of the reactor are isotopic tailoring, nuclear medicine, neutron activation analysis, and radiation and life-cycle testing of devices. In particular, the reactor produces unique radiopharmaceuticals for cancer diagnostics and therapy, as well as up to 5% of the world volume of nuclear-doped silicon for electronics.
