TPU Master’s Student Receives RAS Medal

The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) has announced the results of a competition for the RAS medals and prizes awarded to young scientists and students of Russian higher education institutions for the best research projects.

The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) has announced the results of a competition for the RAS medals and prizes awarded to young scientists and students of Russian higher education institutions for the best research projects. Yana Malkova, a master’s student at Tomsk Polytechnic University, has been awarded for her research on renewable energy.

The Russian Academy of Sciences annually awards 21 medals with prizes of 50,000 rubles each to young scientists and 21 medals with prizes of 25,000 rubles each to students of Russian higher education institutions for the best research papers.

The prizes are awarded in 21 research fields: from mathematics and nuclear physics to economics and agriculture. In 2022, a total of 1330 research papers were submitted by young scientists and students to the competition.

This year, the RAS medal in the field of energy has been awarded to Yana Malkova, a first-year master’s student at the TPU School of Energy & Power Engineering, for her research titled “Optimal connection point and capacity of renewable energy and hydrogen storage systems”. The student’s research supervisor is Ruslan Ufa, associate professor at the TPU Division for Power and Electrical Engineering.

In her research to identify the optimal capacity and placement of a renewable energy system, the student uses her own algorithm based on an iterative method of power flow and loss calculation. The research is funded by the grant from the Russian Science Foundation.

“Today, companies are heading towards carbon neutrality. However, this strategy assumes both improving the energy efficiency of the existing conventional power generation facilities and a partial transition to renewable energy sources. The integration of the latter into the power grid implicates a significant impact on its operating parameters, which should be taken into account when planning a new addition, says Yana Malkova.

“This medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences means recognition of my research at a high level. On top of this, it confirms that the research topic is of immediate interest and my competencies in renewable energy correspond to the honorary title of a young student scientist.”

The competition aims to discover and support talented young researchers, promote their professional growth, and encourage scientific endeavors of young Russian researchers and students of Russian higher education institutions.
