Youth Arctic conference kicks off at TPU

X All-Russian Youth Scientific Conference Creativity of Young – A Step into Successful Future has started at Tomsk Polytechnic University. The topic of the event is Arctic and its Exploration. The conference is held from 29 May to 2 June 2017. The youth conference comprises 13 sessions on various areas related to the Arctic, i.e. The History of Arctic’s and Antarctic’s Exploration, Arctic Natural Resources and their Development, The Change of Environment and Climate in Arctic and Adjacent Territories, Processing of Hydrocarbon Raw Materials and Production of Petroleum Products for Extreme Conditions in the Arctic and others. Scientists from Russian universities including Tomsk, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg, Arkhangelsk, St. Petersburg, Saratov, Yakutsk, Voronezh, Kursk, Yuzhno-sakhalinsk, etc., the Russian Geographical Society (Moscow) and research professor Robert Barry Finkelman from the University of Texas at Dallas (USA) will deliver their lectures during the conference. ‘We expect about 60-70 people from different Russian regions. In addition, five outstanding polar explorers – frequent participants of international polar expeditions in the Arctic and the Antarctic will take part in the conference. They are Ivan Kuzhelivsky, Alexey Rudoy, Igor Smilevets as well as the meteorological engineer at the Dixson Island B.V. Paul and the leading engineer at Dixson Hydrometeostation T.A. Paul. They will talk about their work experience in the Arctic and answer all possible questions,’ said the scientific secretary and deputy chair of organizing committee, Galina Ivanova.   The conference opens with a plenary meeting on May 30. The exhibition of historical materials on the first arctic expeditions is open to public at the University Library, room 118 (53a Belinskogo st.). Lectures on scientific issues of the Arctic research and exploration will be given in the Assembly hall of the Institute of Natural Resources ( room 504, TPU building 20) on May 31 from 10 to 12 a.m.  Scientists will talk about the international cooperation in the exploration of the Arctic and the Antarctic, environmental problems, geology of Arctic oil and gas, etc. Professor Finkelman will present a report on Medical Geology – A Novel Direction in Ecology.

 

A meeting with polar explorers will be arranged in the Assembly hall of the Institute of Natural Resources (room504, TPU building 20) on June 1 from 10 to12 a.m.  Photo exhibitions Path to White Horizons and Tomsk Footprint in the Arctic will accompany the meeting. On the same day films about the Arctic by laureates of international contests will be offered from 12 a.m. to 1 p.m. The film program includes Paths to White Horizons, Dreams and Death of Chelyuskin, Hard Hopes of the Arctic, White Silence, Sannikov Land, Polar Ring etc.

‘An interesting activity – a discussion on the topic Sannikov Land. Whether it was? is scheduled on Friday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to1 p.m.

 

Student teams will present and discuss different scientific hypotheses on Sannikov Land. Winners will be awarded with prizes in the specially designed ‘mess room’ at the University Library (room 504),’ says Galina Ivanova.

All conference activities are free. Tomsk residents are invited to meet the polar explorers and visit the exhibitions.
