Backchar ore sample enriches minerals collection at ETH Zurich

A unique exhibit from the Tomsk Region replenished the collection of the museum of the Swiss Higher Technical School of Zurich (ETH Zurich), the leading technical university in Europe. Now the mineralogical collection of the museum has got a sample of the ore from the Backchar field, i.e. on the of the world’s largest manifestation of iron ore which is located on the territory of the Tomsk Region. The sample was brought by the Tomsk Polytechnic University’s delegation led by Rector Petr Chubik during its visit to the Swiss school.

According to the QS World University Rankings, ETH Zurich takes the 10th place in the world and the first place among technical universities in Europe. There is focusTerra which represents the Earth Science Research and Information Center of ETH Zurich. The center possesses a rich minerals collection which was replenished with the Backchar ore sample. In 1958 a PhD student of TPU Alexander Babin discovered the Backchar iron ore field.


Tomsk Polytechnic University’s delegation also got familiar with activities of the Swiss university and met its Rector Sarah Springman. The rectors discussed further cooperation between the best technical university in continental Europe and one of the best engineering university in Russia and signed a memorandum of intent.
